Overview

A pad of folded wet newspaper does what a wooden block does but far more gently. It is used for final shaping, for chilling a surface that is too soft to touch with wood, and for opening a rim. It costs almost nothing and is replaced constantly, which is exactly why it stays popular in studios that do a lot of small work.

Safety notes

Wet newspaper on hot glass produces a burst of steam. Keep your face clear of the contact point.
Never use printed paper with heavy ink on a clear piece; the ink can transfer into the surface.

Using it well

Practical guidance

Fold the pad so the cut edges are inside; loose edges mark the glass.
Use the pad to open a rim evenly by rotating the pipe as you squeeze.
Refresh the pad often. A loaded pad smears carbon onto the glass.
